High Moisture Corn Protocol
*Harvest HMC at 28%-35% Moisture
*Harvest earlage at 32%-38% Moisture
*Store in sealed structures, bags or bunkers(pack, pack, pack)
*Piles need to be complete, drive over, cover with plastic as soon as pile is complete and use a blanket of tires, butted next to each other to keep plastic tight.
*Use Innoculant, which produces some Accetic Acid, this helps reduce yeast, which can cause problems.(Sci-Tech CS Innoculate)
*For wet corn, not dry, pile and treat with buffered Proponic Acid at rates of 8 lbs. to 20 lbs. per ton, cover with plastic to prevent evaporation of BPA.(remember this application is preserving HMC , not fermenting)
All these applications require good management. You need to feed 6 to 8 inches off a face of forage each day and base on over 100 university studies, Innoculant needs to be a part of every farm harvesting protocol.
There are NO do overs in HMC
Because of the unusual growing season, we have and are currently witnessing some molds showing up in fields, because we don’t know if the molds laid down mycotoxins. We suggest you watch your corn and forages, if you find this to be a problem or concern, feed Sci-Tech App-a-tite, a product containing hydrated sodium, calcium aluminonsilicate, which reduces negative effects of mycotixins when included diets. Also, when feeding new corn silage that is not completely fermented, feed a live fed microbial, (Sci-Mic 40-20) this will be for a smoother transition.
